2026 Player Evaluations

For the AA, AAA, and Majors divisions, player evaluations are an important part of the manager draft process. During evaluations, team managers observe every player to help determine their draft selections and build balanced teams for the season.

Evaluations give managers the opportunity to see players in a consistent, on-field setting as they hit, throw, field, and run. These observations help managers assess overall skill level, athletic ability, and fundamentals so they can make informed draft decisions. No single drill or moment defines a player—managers are looking at the complete picture.

Following evaluations, managers participate in a player draft, selecting players based on what they observed during evaluations, along with league guidelines designed to promote competitive balance. This process helps ensure teams are evenly matched, games are competitive, and players are placed in an environment where they can continue to develop and succeed.

Player evaluations are not tryouts, and every registered player will be drafted onto a team. Attending evaluations is required, as it allows managers to fairly evaluate all players and supports a smooth, transparent draft process for the division.

Evaluation Location, Schedule, and Check-In Procedure

Location

Player evaluations will be held on the North Field at YLMS (the field located between the Tommy Lasorda Field House and Yorba Linda Middle School).

Evaluation Schedule

Evaluations will take place from 5:15-8:00 PM on the following dates:

  • Majors – Tuesday, January 13
  • AAA – Wednesday, January 14
  • AA – Thursday, January 15

Check-In Procedure

Players must check in personally before taking the field. WYLLL Board members will be on site to assist with check-in, answer questions, and ensure players are directed to the correct evaluation stations on time.

You will receive an email prior to evaluations with your player’s assigned time slot for their division’s evaluation day. Please plan to arrive at least 10 minutes before your scheduled time so your player can get ready and be properly placed in line by Board members.

If you are unable to attend your assigned time slot, you may arrive anytime between 5:15-7:30 PM on your division’s evaluation day. Please note that arriving outside your scheduled time may result in a longer wait.

On-Field Evaluation Drills

During evaluations, players will rotate through a short series of on-field drills designed to give managers a consistent look at fundamental baseball skills. These drills reflect common game situations and allow managers to fairly evaluate players as part of the draft process.

  1. Left Field
    1. Players will field three pop-ups in left field.
    2. After each catch or fielded ball, the player will throw to second base.
  2. Shortstop
    1. Players will field three ground balls at shortstop.
    2. After each grounder, the player will throw to first base.
  3. Hitting and Baserunning
    1. Players will face three pitches, with pitch speed adjusted by division.
    2. On the third pitch, players will run the bases, whether or not contact is made.

Players are encouraged to relax, have fun, and give their best effort. Evaluations are meant to support fair team formation and help set every player up for a positive and successful season.

Required Equipment

To participate in player evaluations, all players must bring the following equipment:

  • Baseball glove
  • USA Baseball–stamped, Little League–approved bat
  • Batting helmet

Athletic attire and cleats are strongly recommended to allow players to move comfortably and safely during drills.

Please be sure all equipment is clearly labeled with your player’s name when possible.
